KINGPIN: The Portsmouth-Born MC and Platform Founder Behind KINGPIN HIP HOP

KINGPIN is a Portsmouth-born MC, artist, producer and platform founder. Born and raised on the South Coast, he is an active recording and performing artist as well as the founder of KINGPIN HIP HOP - one of the UK's most active independent hip hop media platforms, broadcasting live every Friday at 8PM GMT. The two are distinct but inseparable: KINGPIN the artist, and KINGPIN HIP HOP the platform he built.

The Education

KINGPIN studied on the UK's first ever BA (Hons) Music Industry Practice - Rap and MC Pathway at ACM Guildford - a course that made national headlines when it launched in 2019 and was featured in NME, Crack Magazine and beyond.

The course was led by ShaoDow - AIM Award-winning rapper and one of the most respected independent MCs in UK hip hop - with teaching from Funky DL, one of the genre's most accomplished lyricists and producers. The cohort included fellow artists who would go on to make their own mark on the UK scene.

That foundation is visible in everything KINGPIN has built since. The understanding of lyricism, flow, delivery and originality that the course instilled - combined with the business knowledge of how to build and monetise a music career independently - is the blueprint both his artistry and his platform run on.

The Portsmouth Scene

Before the platform, there was the stage. KINGPIN is a product of Portsmouth's hip hop underground - a scene that has been building quietly for years, held together by a network of artists, promoters and events that the rest of the country is only starting to notice.

Central to that scene is Word of Mouth - Portsmouth's longest-running hip hop collective and promoter, responsible for Grab Da Mic, the city's longest-running hip hop night at the Wedgewood Rooms, and Battlegrounds, the South Coast's premier battle rap event. KINGPIN has headlined both. That live experience - the pressure of performing, of competing, of commanding a room - is where the no-filter approach that now defines everything he does was forged.

His recorded output includes work with Reklews - the Liverpool-based producer and Blah Records stalwart whose production credits span some of the most respected names in UK underground hip hop, including collaborations with Lee Scott, Cult of the Damned and Sonnyjim. Their single "Taxi" is among KINGPIN's early releases, connecting the Portsmouth scene directly to the wider UK underground network. His forthcoming single "My Town" marks the next chapter of his recording career.

The Influences

KINGPIN's artistic sensibility draws from the South Coast and the independent UK hip hop tradition around it. Artists like Ocean Wisdom - one of the most technically gifted MCs Britain has produced, known for a rapid-fire delivery and dense lyricism - and the catalogue and ethos of High Focus Records shaped his understanding of what British hip hop could be outside the mainstream: raw, intelligent and entirely on its own terms.

That influence runs through everything - the honesty of the feedback he gives artists, the independence of the platform model, the refusal to dress things up in his own music or anyone else's.

The Platform

KINGPIN HIP HOP launched in 2023 with a simple premise: independent artists deserve a real platform. Not a repost. Not a like. A genuine broadcast with an audience, honest reactions and real exposure.

By 2026 that premise has been proven. KINGPIN HIP HOP - found on YouTube at @KingpinHipHop and on Facebook at KINGPINHipHop - has accumulated more than 7.5 million Shorts views, grown to 6,200 YouTube subscribers and built a Facebook community of over 10,000 fans, entirely organically and without advertising. The Friday night live show has not missed a week since launch.

Over 500 tracks reviewed. Real opinions. No filter.

The services KINGPIN HIP HOP offers - artist features from £30, track feedback from £20, studio services and membership tiers - all come from the same place as the education and the stage time: a genuine understanding of what independent artists need to move forward, and a refusal to sell them anything less.

South Coast, Global Reach

The South Coast has always produced artists who had to work twice as hard to be heard. No major label infrastructure. No industry corridor. Just the music, the live scene, and the community that builds around it.

KINGPIN is proof that you do not need to leave to build something real - as an artist or as a platform. UK rooted. Global reach.
