Lyric on Graft, Growth & Getting Signed

Lyric has been a fixture in the South Coast scene long enough that consistency is no longer a talking point — it's an expectation. We sat down to talk about what the grind actually looks like from the inside, and what getting signed would mean for an artist who has built something real without it.

On the Graft

"People see the finished track. They don't see the three versions that came before it that got scrapped. They don't see the session that went until 4AM and produced nothing usable. The graft is not glamorous and it's not supposed to be — it's supposed to produce good music."

The discipline is visible in the output. Lyric releases consistently, maintains a clear artistic identity across different projects, and has never chased a trend. In a scene where artists pivot to whatever sound is getting plays, that consistency is both rare and hard-won.

"I know who I am as an artist. That took years to work out and I'm not going to undermine it for a streaming bump."

On Growth

The numbers have grown steadily rather than spiking from a single viral moment. Monthly listeners, stream counts, live show capacity — all of it has moved in one direction over three years of consistent work.

"Slow growth is underrated. When you have a hit and then nothing, you spend all your time chasing the hit. When growth is consistent, you can actually develop as an artist at the same time. The two things happen together."

The fanbase is genuine. People at the shows know the words. The WhatsApp community engagement is high. These are not passive streamers — they're people who have followed the journey.

On Getting Signed

The label conversations have happened. So far, none of them have produced a deal that made sense.

"They want things I'm not prepared to give. Masters, creative control, territory exclusivity — the deal always comes with something that means I'd be paying for their infrastructure with my freedom. I haven't found one yet where the trade is worth making."

The independence is a strategic position, not a romantic one. Lyric is clear that the right deal — one that brings genuine infrastructure without extracting ownership — would be worth considering. The wrong deal, dressed up as the right one, is not.

"The leverage is in the catalogue and the audience. As long as those are growing, I'm in a better negotiating position next year than I am today. I'm in no rush."
