50 Cent had to battle Eminem before getting signed to Shady Records.
Eminem reveals 50 Cent battled him before signing to Shady Records. 50 Cent says the result was rigged because Em judged his own fight.

Before 50 Cent became the biggest rapper alive, he had to beat Eminem in a battle just to get signed. And Eminem was judging his own fight.
That is the story Em laid out in an MTV interview, saying every artist on Shady Records had to go through him first. His words: "All the members that I sign to my label, I got to battle them first, that's why I only signed like 3 cats". Three, at the time. That puts whoever passed that test in one of the most exclusive rooms in rap.
Get closer to the culture: the community, early drops and member rates.
Join the Inner Circle →50 confirmed it happened. But he is not calling it a loss. He is calling it theft. "Yeah, yeah, absolutely cheated", because the man running the label was also the man deciding who won. Twenty plus years later and 50 is still replaying that battle like it is unfinished business.
Context makes it hit harder. 50 had just been dropped by Columbia after getting shot. Blackballed across the industry. He turned down a 1.3 million dollar Universal deal on pure instinct before Eminem heard Guess Who's Back? on the set of 8 Mile and brought him into Shady and Aftermath. That rigged battle was the hinge that whole story turned on.
Now look where it is heading. 50 is starring in the Street Fighter reboot and has said out loud he wants Eminem on the soundtrack. He is teasing new music between them, and previewing his first solo material since 2014 under something called The Algorithm.
If that reunion lands, it closes a loop that started with a fixed battle and a declined bag. Question is whether Em finally admits 50 actually won that night, or whether this beef stays alive forever as rap's longest running inside joke.
